PROLOGUE TO PRIMER 3...
Darn... I woke up WAYYY late this morning and missed the entire HTA lecture. This is like, Andrew's class, and I guess I missed all his philosophical "teachings". Anyway, I came in time to the studio and we all marched together to LT 7 to watch Animatrix at 9:30++. This is the selected film we're gonna use for our project...
Ahem... Primer 3 is, well... about exploring spaces... something about 9 squares... gawd, I don't even remember the title coz they said there'll be no handout for the briefing this time. As much as I remember, it's something called "Exploring the Nine" problem or something like that. I heard last year it was about taking a certain frame or scene from a movie and interpret it into an existing space through your model. Sounds cheam right? Uber cheam man. It's kind of a breakaway from Primer 1 & 2... but it sounds more complicated. And according to Idris... it's getting closer to architecture now. Well ABOUT TIME it did. All 3 Primers are irrelevant to actual architecture and construction, although mildly related. I guess the purpose of these 3 Primers is to train our skill in designing...
Watched all the short films in less than 2 hours... everyone was whining becoz it hasn't ended yet. So much psychology in that... watching 6 short films in a row is excruciating... felt like it took so long. My second time watching Animatrix and it's still pretty complex to me, but at least I understand it slightly better now I guess. What's more complex is to be examining all 9 short films (Final Flight of the Osiris, The Second Renaissance Pt 1 & 2, A Kid's Story, Program, Beyond, Detective Story, World Record and Matriculated ... I'm listing them down for my own referrence actually) and interpreting the "space" that the directors and animators used to create the mood and feeling in the scenes.
Overall... all films are impressive animation-wise. You really get to appreciate how spectacular the animation is because they are beyond just sketches on paper with pencils and colour and shading... I bet they used some computer assistance in making the motion more human-like, plus some very artistic effects. To justify all the bullshit I just said, go grab a DVD or VCD... or you probably have already watched it before.
Conversation with Mr. Andrew...
After the show was over and 88 casualties suffered sore posteriors... I went down to Andrew and apologized for being late... and asked him whether he could pass me the missing pages he owed us from yesterday's HTA handout. So he asked me to follow him back to the studio to get it. We had another casual conversation as we walked along...
He asked me which film will I choose... I told him it's difficult to choose becoz watching those films really reversed my understanding of space... I'm gonna have to learn to define space again somehow. Most likely I'll choose either Detective Story, Final Flight of the Osiris, or Program... but nothing is confirmed until I have a better understanding of what they want from me. And he opened his philosophically godly mouth and spoke of "architectural space" being different from "cinematic space". Whoa. Give me half an hour to process what I just said.
He asked me why I was late, and I told him I undeliberately woke up late... he told me to "put a stop to that"... wooo... suddenly our conversation on "space" just zipped away in a flash. Ok... he made me rather guilty just now... blame my motor responses for involuntarily shutting off the alarm even though it's on snooze everyday... blame my alarm for not continuing snooze-mode... blame my conscience... blame my bed... blame the cool weather... blame me... sigh.
Terrence...
Last evening he asked me whether I wanna go out for a meal or not... I just had dinner at that time, the weather was cool, and all I wanted to do was to stay in my room all night. But eventually I had to oblige when he said he'll meet me at my room. I was kinda startled that he's willing to come all the way to my flat just to... well, maybe get me to go out with him??
So he did come to my unit, and we took the 106 to Clementi... but after walking round and round and round he said we might as well go to Jurong East, so we took an MRT to Jurong East. We had supper at S11 Food Court, and walked to nearby Jurong Centre coz he wanted to see the ice-skating rink. There was an ice hockey game going on and it turned out to be quite interesting to watch two teams of bulky, chunky white guys in bulkier, chunkier elbow guards, knee guards, arm pads, shin pads and groin pads all balancing on two thin slices of stainless steel whacking the shit outta the poor abused hockey disk thingy.
I only reached home at about 10:30pm, tried playing this silly FPS called Marine Sharpshooters: Jungle Warfare on my laptop, but gave up after getting killed 10 minutes into the game 3 times . After I swallowed down 4 bananas and took a warm bath, I opened the DVD I borrowed that evening... DR. ZHIVAGO. Yeah, you probably have never heard of it before... it's supposed to be a classic epic from the director of Lawrence of Arabia (and you say, who?). I thought I'd watch a well-recommended classic (well-recommended by white-haired adults paying homage to the film in magazines and newspapers, not well-recommended by teenagers of this millennium). 20 minutes into the movie, I ended up struggling to NOT doze off. Eventually the thing I really wanted to watch was countless sheeps hopping over a fence... ZzZzZzZzZ...
Till the next time... |
